120mlmilk
½teaspoonsalt
¼teaspoonground black pepper
⅛teaspoonground nutmeg
500gfresh green beans
250gFrench's crispy fried onions
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°F / 175°C (325°F convection / 160°C fan).
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add 1 pound (500 g) fresh green beans and cook for 8–10 minutes until just tender. Drain well.
In a 6 x 8½-inch (16 x 22 cm) baking dish, combine 1 (10.5-ounce / 300 g) can Campbell's Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup, ½ cup (120 ml) milk, ½ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper, and ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg. Stir until smooth.
Add 1 pound (500 g) blanched green beans to the dish and toss gently until well coated in the sauce. Sprinkle ⅔ of the 1 (8.8-ounce / 250 g) container French's Crispy Fried Onions over the beans, then mix them in so they are evenly distributed with the sauce.
Bake for 20 minutes, until hot and bubbling.
Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining ⅓ of the French's Crispy Fried Onions evenly over the top.
Return the casserole to the oven and bake for 5 minutes more, until the onions are golden and crisp.
Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
Don't Overcook the Beans: I like to cook the green beans until just tender. They continue cooking in the oven, so this helps them keep a pleasant texture.Drain the Beans Well: Excess moisture can thin the sauce, so I always make sure the beans are thoroughly drained before adding them to the casserole.Save Some Onions for the Top: Reserving part of the crispy onions for the final bake gives the casserole its classic crunchy topping.Perfect for Holiday Prep: I often assemble the casserole ahead of time and refrigerate it. Then I add the final onion topping just before baking.
