This Apple Strudel wraps soft apples, crunchy walnuts, and cinnamon inside buttery filo pastry for a crisp, golden dessert that’s easy to make and always a favorite.
In a medium saucepan, add the grated apples and brown sugar. Cook over medium heat until the apples are soft and caramelized, about 10 minutes.
Mix the cornstarch with water in a small bowl. Stir it into the apples and cook until the mixture thickens. Set aside to cool.
Chop the walnuts finely. Place them in a small bowl with brown sugar and cinnamon powder. Mix well until combined.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
Place one sheet of filo pastry on a flat surface. Brush it lightly with melted butter, then sprinkle with some of the walnut mixture. Repeat the process with two more sheets to make three layers.
Spoon ¼ of the apple mixture along one edge of the stacked sheets. Roll up tightly to form a strudel and place it on a baking tray.
Repeat the process with the remaining sheets, walnut mixture, and apple filling to make four strudels.
Cut each strudel into four pieces. Brush the tops generously with melted butter.
Bake for 40–45 minutes until golden and crisp.
Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Choose the Right Apples: I like using Granny Smith because their tartness balances the sweet filling so well. Nut Texture: Sometimes I chop the walnuts a little chunkier when I want extra crunch in each bite. Best Served Warm: I find strudel tastes best fresh from the oven when the pastry is still crisp.
