The first time I tried coffee flan, one spoonful was all it took to win me over. It's creamy, rich with caramel and coffee, and now it's a favorite in my home.

Making coffee flan has become one of my quiet kitchen rituals.
Something about stirring the caramel, whisking the custard, and pouring everything into little glasses feels slow and grounding in the best way.
That final flip, when the flan slides out and the coffee and caramel run gently down the sides, is always a moment of joy.
This one is a flavored flan with a grown-up twist. The first time I tried adding coffee, I wasn't sure how it would go, but now I never skip it.
Some call it flan de café, others say flan with coffee or flan coffee, whatever the name, it's a dessert that always delivers.
What I like most is how simple it is. This coffee flan recipe doesn't ask for anything fancy.

The caramel is just sugar, water, and a splash of lemon juice. For the custard, I like to dissolve the instant coffee in a little water first; it blends more easily when I whisk it with the eggs, sugar, and milk.
Instead of baking it, I cook it on the stove in a water bath, less fuss and no need to heat up the oven. After it sets, a few hours in the fridge help bring everything together.
I've tested plenty of coffee flan recipes, but this one's stayed my go-to because it's reliable, easy, and the flavor only gets better overnight.
If you've been looking for flan recipes easy enough to make on a weeknight but elegant enough to serve at a dinner party, this is it.
That coffee caramel flavor? It's cozy, smooth, and just sweet enough to end the meal right.

🧾Coffee Flan Ingredients
Here's what you need to make this Coffee Flan recipe:
Caramel:
- Sugar: I always use plain white sugar for caramel because it melts evenly and gives that rich amber color I love. It's the perfect base for a glossy caramel layer.
- Water: Just a little water helps the sugar dissolve smoothly without burning; it's a simple trick that makes caramel easier to manage.
- Lemon Juice: I add a spoonful of lemon juice to keep the caramel from crystallizing. It also gives the caramel a subtle brightness that balances the sweetness.
Flan:
- Milk: I stick with whole milk here because it makes the custard creamy without feeling too heavy. It gives the flan that smooth, comforting texture I always look for. You can even swap in some double cream for an extra indulgent treat!
- Sugar: This amount of sugar brings just the right sweetness to the custard, especially with the strong coffee and caramel notes coming through.
- Eggs and Egg Yolks: I like using a mix of whole eggs and yolks. The whole eggs help it set properly, and the extra yolks make it rich and velvety.
- Instant Coffee: I go for instant coffee because it blends quickly and gives a deep coffee flavor without the bitterness. I dissolve it in a little water first so it mixes in smoothly. If you prefer, you can swap it for espresso coffee for a stronger taste.

📖Variations
- Vanilla Coffee Flan: Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the custard for a smooth and mellow flavor that softens the coffee's intensity.
- Mocha Flan: Mix 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder into the custard along with the coffee to create a subtle chocolate-coffee blend.
- Espresso Flan: Replace the instant coffee with 2 shots of cooled espresso for a deeper, more intense coffee flavor.
- Coconut Coffee Flan: Use half coconut milk and half regular milk to give the flan a light tropical twist with a hint of nuttiness.
- Spiced Coffee Flan: Stir in a pinch of ground cinnamon or cardamom for a cozy, aromatic touch that pairs beautifully with the caramel.

💭Tips for Recipe Success
Use Wide Glasses or Ramekins: I like to use wider glasses so the flan sets faster and releases more easily when flipped.
Don't Stir the Caramel: I let it boil undisturbed to keep it smooth; stirring can cause it to crystallize.
Add Foil Loosely: I cover each glass tightly with foil, but not pressed down hard, so steam can escape without dripping into the custard.
Avoid Overcooking: I check for a gentle jiggle in the center; the flan will continue to firm up as it cools.
To Store Leftovers: Keep any extra flan covered in the fridge for up to 3 days. I like to keep them in the same glass and flip them right before serving.
