Creamy tomato penne pasta combines canned tomatoes, garlic, basil, heavy cream, and Parmesan in a smooth tomato-forward sauce. The pasta finishes in the skillet with reserved pasta water, so the sauce coats every piece of penne without becoming too heavy.

Why You'll Love This Creamy Tomato Penne Pasta
- Tomato-forward sauce: Canned tomatoes remain the main flavor while the cream softens their acidity and rounds out the sauce.
- Simple ingredient list: Onion, garlic, tomatoes, basil, cream, and Parmesan create a complete sauce without vodka or tomato paste.
- Sauce that clings: Reserved pasta water and finely grated Parmesan help the sauce hold onto the ridges and hollow centers of the penne.
- Useful meat-free dinner: The pasta is substantial enough to serve as a main course with salad, vegetables, or garlic bread.
What appeals to me about this creamy tomato pasta is how familiar ingredients come together without relying on a prepared sauce. Canned tomatoes provide the base, and the onion, garlic, and basil give the sauce enough depth to feel complete before the cream and Parmesan are added. It has the comfort of my cherry tomato pasta, but the cream gives this version a softer finish. When I want a greener, herb-led sauce instead, my fresh basil pesto pasta offers a completely different way to turn a short list of ingredients into a satisfying meal.
For me, the balance depends on cooking the sauce in the right order. Softening the onion first creates a mellow savory foundation, while adding the garlic before the tomatoes keeps its flavor noticeable without allowing it to dominate. The tomatoes then cook down before the heavy cream goes in, which preserves their bright, tangy character while creating a smoother texture. Reserved pasta water loosens the sauce and helps it move through the penne, and the finely grated Parmesan gives it body as it melts. Unlike the concentrated tomato and eggplant flavor of my pasta alla Norma, this recipe is gentler and creamier, with basil adding freshness at the end.

Key Ingredients for Creamy Tomato Penne Pasta
You'll find the exact measurements in the recipe card, but here's a closer look at the ingredients that shape the sauce.
- Penne pasta: I like how the ridges and hollow centers catch the sauce, so each piece carries both the creamy tomato base and the grated cheese.
- Canned tomatoes: For me, these are the defining ingredient because they provide the sauce's body, acidity, and clear tomato flavor.
- Heavy cream and Parmesan: My aim with this combination is to soften the tomatoes and add richness without turning the dish into a cream-dominant pasta.
- Onion, garlic, and basil: I use this trio to build savory depth at the beginning and a fresher herbal note before the pasta is finished.
How to Make Creamy Tomato Penne Pasta
You can find the complete printable recipe with measurements below, but here is a quick overview of the four main stages.

1. Cook the penne: Bring a pot of water to a boil, season it with salt, and cook the penne. Reserve some pasta water before draining.
2. Build the tomato base: Heat the oil in a skillet, cook the onion with salt until softened, then stir in the garlic and canned tomatoes.
3. Make the sauce creamy: Break up the tomatoes as they cook, then add the basil, ground black pepper, and heavy cream.
4. Finish the pasta: Add the drained penne and reserved pasta water, toss until coated, then stir in the Parmesan and serve.

Tips for Creamy Tomato Penne Pasta
- Reserve the pasta water first: I always scoop out a little pasta water before draining because it is much easier than trying to remember once the pasta is already in the colander.
- Break up the tomatoes: I crush the tomatoes as they cook so the sauce becomes smoother and coats the penne more evenly.
- Add the cream after the tomatoes: I let the tomato base cook first, then stir in the cream so the sauce keeps its fresh tomato flavor.
- Grate the Parmesan finely: For me, finely grated Parmesan works best because it melts quickly and blends smoothly into the hot pasta.
Storage
I store leftover creamy tomato penne pasta in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. When reheating it, I add a small splash of water or cream and warm it gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, stirring until the sauce becomes smooth again.
I do not recommend freezing this pasta because the cream sauce can separate and the penne may become too soft after thawing.
What to Serve with Creamy Tomato Penne Pasta
I like to balance the creamy sauce with something crisp or garlicky. A simple green salad or roasted vegetables keeps the meal lighter, while my crispy air fryer garlic bread is useful for scooping up the tomato cream sauce left in the bowl.
