This chocolate mug cake is a quick, rich, and moist chocolate mug cake made in the microwave in minutes. It's the perfect easy chocolate mug cake for a warm single-serve chocolate cake anytime.

Recipe for Chocolate Mug Cake (Ready in 1 Minute)

I've made this chocolate mug cake more times than I can admit, and it's still my favorite easy chocolate mug cake when I want something quick and cozy. It tastes like real chocolate cake, not the dry microwave chocolate cake versions out there. The cocoa gives it depth, and the melted chocolate center makes it feel like the best chocolate mug cake. With no egg, no mixer, and just a spoon, it becomes a moist chocolate mug cake in minutes, truly a 1-minute chocolate mug cake, and the perfect microwave chocolate mug cake for a single-serve chocolate cake craving.

I've tried peanut butter, cinnamon, and even crushed cookies when I ran out of cocoa, and it still works. But I usually stick to the basics because this chocolate mug cake recipe always turns out warm, soft, and comforting. It's the kind of cake in a mug I make just for myself when I want a fast chocolate dessert that never disappoints.

Why You'll Love It

  • Easy Pantry Ingredients: You probably already have everything you need in your kitchen.
  • Ready in Under 5 Minutes: When you need dessert now, this recipe saves the day.
  • One Mug, One Spoon, Zero Stress: You mix and cook everything in one mug, no extra dishes to clean.

Key Ingredients in Chocolate Mug Cake

You'll find the exact measurements in the recipe card, but here's a closer look at key ingredients and why I use them.

  • Dry Base (Flour, Sugar, Baking Powder, Cocoa): I start with all-purpose flour for a soft texture, then a touch of sugar to balance the cocoa. A little baking powder helps the cake rise, and unsweetened cocoa gives it that deep chocolate flavor I love.
  • Milk for Moisture: I prefer whole milk because it makes the batter extra creamy, but any milk works. It blends everything smoothly and keeps the cake tender.
  • Oil for Softness: A bit of neutral oil adds the right amount of moisture without affecting the chocolate flavor. It's what makes the mug cake stay soft instead of drying out.
  • Chocolate Center: I always press a few chocolate pieces into the middle before microwaving. They melt into a gooey center, and it's honestly my favorite part.

How to Make Chocolate Mug Cake

You can find the complete printable recipe with measurements below, but for now, here's a quick overview of how it goes:

How to Make Chocolate Mug Cake

1. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a microwave-safe mug, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and cocoa until smooth.

2. Add the Wet Ingredients: Add the milk and oil, then stir until smooth.

3. Add the Chocolate Center: Place the chocolate pieces in the center and gently press them into the batter for a gooey treat.

4. Microwave Until Set: Microwave the mug on high for 1 minute 20 to 40 seconds, until the cake rises and sets but stays moist. Keep an eye on it, as times may vary.

My Tips for Recipe Success

Use a Wide Mug: I go for a mug with a wider opening so the cake cooks more evenly and doesn't bubble over.

Sift the Cocoa if It's Clumpy: Sometimes cocoa powder has little lumps, so I quickly sift it with a spoon right into the mug to keep the batter smooth.

Check the Texture by Touch: I gently press the top of the cake with a spoon; if it springs back, it's done; if it's sticky, microwave for 10 more seconds.

Clean the Rim before Microwaving: I always wipe the rim of the mug so the batter doesn't cook onto the edges; it keeps it looking tidy and easier to eat.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoon flour
  • 1½ tbsp sugar
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 5 tablespoon milk
  • 1½ tbsp vegetable oil
  • 3-4 chocolate pieces
Prevent your screen from going dark

Instructions

  • In a microwave-safe mug, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and cocoa powder until evenly combined. Add the milk and vegetable oil, then stir until the batter is smooth and lump-free.
  • Press the chocolate pieces into the center of the batter.
  • Microwave on high for 1 minute and 20 seconds to 1 minute and 40 seconds, until the cake has risen and set.
  • Let it cool for 1-2 minutes before eating directly from the mug.

Notes

Mix It Thoroughly: I like to stir the batter really well until it's completely smooth; no dry flour bits hiding at the bottom.
Tuck in the Chocolate: I always press the chocolate right into the center for that soft, molten middle; it's the best part.
Watch the Microwave Time: I start with 1 minute 20 seconds and adjust depending on how strong the microwave is; it’s better a little gooey than overcooked.
Let It Cool Just a Bit: I give it a minute or two to cool slightly; it sets better and won’t burn your mouth.
Use a Big Enough Mug: I go for a medium-sized mug so it doesn’t overflow when it rises.
