This apple cider chicken is a savory skillet chicken recipe made with bone-in, skin-on chicken, apples, shallots, garlic, and hard apple cider. The chicken cooks until tender while the cider reduces into a glossy pan sauce that feels simple, seasonal, and full of flavor.

Why You'll Love My Apple Cider Chicken
- Full of Fall Flavor: Apples, shallots, and cider make the sauce sweet, savory, and rich.
- Made in One Skillet: The chicken, apples, and sauce all come together in the same pan.
- Great for Bone-in Chicken: The skin gets golden first, then the chicken finishes gently in the cider.
- Simple but Special: It feels a little different from everyday chicken without needing complicated ingredients.
I like this kind of chicken dinner because it sits right in that sweet spot between rustic and elegant. The apples soften in butter, the chicken gets golden in the same pan, and the cider pulls everything together into a sauce that tastes like you spent more time on it than you did. It reminds me of the kind of meal I would make when I want something more interesting than plain skillet chicken, but still easy enough for a normal evening. If you enjoy simple chicken dinners, this would sit nicely beside recipes like Garlic Butter Chicken Thighs, Italian Chicken Thighs, or Greek Lemon Chicken.
What makes this recipe work so well is the balance between the golden chicken skin, the tender meat, and the slightly sweet cider sauce. The apples bring softness and sweetness, while the shallot and garlic keep the sauce savory. Searing the chicken first is important because those browned bits in the skillet give the cider sauce much more depth. I also like that the sauce reduces naturally instead of needing cream or flour, so the finished dish feels rich but not heavy. It has the same comforting feeling as a cozy chicken skillet, but with a brighter apple-cider flavor that makes it stand out.
Key Ingredients in Apple Cider Chicken
These ingredients work together to create the sweet-savory flavor and tender texture that make this recipe so good.
- Bone-in, Skin-on Chicken Pieces: I like using bone-in chicken here because it stays juicy while the skin turns golden and gives the sauce more flavor.
- Hard Apple Cider: This is what makes the sauce special. It brings a deeper apple flavor than regular apple juice and cooks down into a glossy pan sauce.
- Apples: I prefer firm apples because they soften in the butter but still hold their shape when they go back into the skillet.
- Shallot and Garlic: These keep the sauce savory and balanced, so the dish tastes rich and flavorful instead of too sweet.
How to Make Apple Cider Chicken
Follow these simple steps to make the chicken tender and the cider sauce glossy. You can find the complete printable recipe with measurements below.

1. Cook the Apples: Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced apples and cook until lightly golden and slightly softened. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
2. Sear the Chicken: Heat the olive oil in the same skillet. Add the chicken thighs, season with salt and black pepper, and sear on both sides until the skin is deeply golden. Remove the chicken from the skillet.
3. Build the Sauce: Add the shallot to the skillet and cook until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook briefly, just until fragrant.
4. Simmer and Finish: Return the chicken to the skillet, pour in the hard apple cider, and simmer covered until the chicken is cooked through and tender. Uncover, reduce the sauce slightly, return the apples, spoon the sauce over the chicken, and serve hot.

Helpful Swaps
- Use fresh apple cider or apple juice with a splash of chicken broth if you want an alcohol-free version.
- Swap the shallot for ½ small yellow onion if that is what you have.
- Add a small sprig of thyme or rosemary if you want a more herb-forward sauce.
- Use firm pears instead of apples for a softer, slightly different sweet-savory flavor.
Tips for Apple Cider Chicken
Brown the Chicken Well: I like to take my time with the chicken thighs at the beginning because the golden skin gives the whole sauce a richer flavor. If the chicken is moved too soon, it will not get that deep color.
Keep the Simmer Gentle: Once the hard apple cider goes in, I keep the heat gentle rather than boiling it hard. This helps the chicken thighs stay tender while the sauce slowly reduces.
Slice the Apples Thick: I prefer thicker apple slices because they soften in the butter but still hold their shape at the end. Thin slices can break down too much once they go back into the sauce.
Taste the Sauce at the End: Hard cider can vary in sweetness, so I always taste the sauce before serving. If it tastes a little too sweet, a small pinch of salt helps balance everything.
Storage
Store leftover apple cider chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, and reheat it gently on the stove with a splash of water or broth so the sauce loosens again.
What to Serve With Apple Cider Chicken Thighs
I like serving these apple cider chicken thighs with a fresh salad to balance the buttery apples and rich cider sauce. A simple green salad with Italian dressing works beautifully, but a Cucumber and Avocado Salad, Mediterranean Chickpea Salad, or Tomato Salad would also make the meal feel lighter and fresher. If you want something a little heartier, serve it with mashed potatoes, roasted potatoes, or buttered rice to catch the sauce.
