Blueberry Crumble

Published: May 5, 2025 by Estefania · This post may contain affiliate links · 1 Comment

I make this blueberry crumble when I want something quick and cozy without a lot of fuss. It’s simple, uses what I already have, and tastes like I spent way more time on it. No oats, no fancy steps, just jammy blueberries and a golden, buttery topping. Recipe includes a quick how-to video!

Blueberry Crumble

If you're after easy blueberry desserts or just a simple recipe with blueberries, this one’s a personal favorite.

It reminds me of a blueberry oat cobbler, only faster and easier.

I usually make it when I want something warm and cozy after a long day, no mixer, no chilling, no fuss. Just mix, layer, bake, and you’ve got dessert.

I’ve used both fresh and frozen berries, and honestly, they both work great.

As it bakes, the blueberries turn soft and juicy, bubbling up around the edges while the cinnamon topping turns crisp and golden.

Whether I serve it warm with ice cream or just take a spoon straight to the dish, this blueberry crumble always hits the spot.

Blueberry Crumble

What I love about this blueberry crumble is how effortlessly it comes together.

The filling uses just five ingredients, blueberries, sugar, flour, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt.

The flour thickens the juices slightly as it bakes, and the lemon adds a subtle brightness that keeps the flavor balanced.

The topping is simple but so good. I use melted butter for ease, mixing it with flour, sugar, cinnamon, and a little salt to get soft crumbles that bake into crisp, golden clusters.

This is one of those easy blueberry desserts that’s hard to mess up.

If you’re looking for blueberry recipes easy enough for a weeknight or a simple recipe with blueberries that feels special, this one delivers.

You can use fresh or frozen fruit, and while it’s perfect on its own, it’s even better with vanilla ice cream.

⭐Why You'll Love This Blueberry Crumble

  • It’s Made with Ingredients You Already Have: No special ingredients needed, just everyday pantry staples.
  • Works with Fresh or Frozen Blueberries: You can make this year-round, no matter what’s in season.
  • The Crumble Topping Is Crisp and Buttery: Melted butter helps the topping bake into golden, crunchy clumps every time.
  • No Fancy Tools or Prep: Everything comes together with just two bowls and a spoon.
  • Warm, Sweet, and Comforting: It’s the kind of dessert that always hits the spot, whether you're serving guests or treating yourself.

🧾Blueberry Crumble Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make this Blueberry Crumble recipe:

  • Fresh Blueberries: I love using fresh blueberries when they’re in season because they burst as they bake and create the most delicious, jammy filling.
  • Granulated Sugar: A little sugar goes into both the filling and the topping, it sweetens the berries just enough and gives the crumble its classic, slightly crispy finish.
  • All-Purpose Flour: I use flour in two ways here, just a bit in the filling to help thicken the blueberry juices, and more in the topping to create that soft, crumbly texture I always look for in a good crumble.
  • Lemon Juice: A splash of lemon really brightens the blueberry flavor. I find it keeps the filling from tasting too heavy or overly sweet.
  • Salt: I always include a small pinch in both the filling and the topping. It’s such a small thing, but it pulls all the flavors together and makes the sweetness feel more balanced.
  • Melted Butter: Melted butter makes this recipe so easy; you just stir it in. It brings everything together and bakes into those golden, buttery crumbles that everyone loves.
  • Cinnamon: Just a touch adds warmth and depth to the topping. I love how it makes the kitchen smell while the crumble’s in the oven; it’s cozy and inviting every time.

📖Variations

  • Mixed Berry Crumble: Swap half of the blueberries with raspberries, blackberries, or chopped strawberries.
  • Blueberry Peach Crumble: Add sliced peaches along with the blueberries, about half and half. The peaches add a soft, juicy sweetness that pairs perfectly with the berries.
  • Oat Crumble Topping: Replace ½ cup of the flour in the topping with rolled oats. It gives the crumble a heartier texture and a slightly toasty flavor that works really well with the fruit.
  • Nutty Blueberry Crumble: Mix ¼ cup of chopped almonds, walnuts, or pecans into the crumble topping. I love how the nuts add a light crunch and make the topping even more satisfying.

💭Tips for Recipe Success

Use a Glass or Ceramic Dish for Best Results: I find that glass or ceramic distributes heat more evenly, which helps the filling cook through while the topping gets that perfect golden crunch.

Watch for Bubbling Edges: One of the best signs that your crumble is ready is when you see the fruit juices bubbling up around the edges, this means the filling has thickened and the topping is baked.

Let it Sit Uncovered: After baking, I like to let it cool on the counter without covering it, this keeps the topping crisp instead of softening from steam.

Dress It Up with Lemon Zest or Mint: If you're serving guests, a sprinkle of fresh lemon zest or a small mint leaf on each portion adds a lovely fresh touch.

Serve It in Individual Ramekins: For something a little more special, divide the crumble into ramekins before baking. It makes for cute, single-serve portions and saves on scooping later.

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 190°C/375°F (170°C/338°F fan-assisted).
  • In a large bowl, combine the blueberries, sugar, flour, lemon juice, and salt. Gently stir until the berries are fully coated and everything looks evenly mixed.
  • Pour the blueberry mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out into an even layer.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, salt, and cinnamon for the topping.
  • Add the melted butter to the dry ingredients and stir until the mixture turns into soft, crumbly clumps.
  • Spread the crumble topping evenly over the blueberry filling, making sure to cover all the fruit without pressing it down.
  • Place the dish in the center of the oven and bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the blueberry filling is bubbling around the edges.
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool for 10–15 minutes before serving so the filling can set slightly.

Notes

Use Frozen Blueberries If Needed: I’ve made this with frozen berries when fresh ones weren’t available, just thaw them first and drain off the extra liquid.
Don’t Press the Topping Down: Leaving the crumble loose creates a crisp, golden top that contrasts beautifully with the soft fruit underneath.
Add Nuts for Crunch: Sometimes I stir in a handful of chopped almonds or walnuts into the topping, it adds a lovely texture.
Let It Rest before Serving: Giving it 10–15 minutes out of the oven helps the filling thicken slightly and makes it easier to serve.
Reheat Leftovers in the Oven: I prefer warming it up in the oven rather than the microwave to keep the topping crisp.
