5-Minute Hummus Without Tahini, Fresh, Light, and So Easy to Make

I first made hummus without tahini on a day when I was out of tahini, and it surprised me how good it turned out. Chickpeas, garlic, lemon, and extra virgin olive oil are ingredients I always have on hand, and together they make a wonderfully smooth dip. Since then, it's become my go-to hummus recipe whenever I want something quick and fresh.

This simple homemade hummus recipe without tahini is creamy, garlicky, and perfect for snacking or sharing. Sometimes I blend in roasted red peppers or a handful of herbs, but even the basic version has so much flavor. If you're curious about how to make hummus without tahini or just want an easy hummus recipe for busy days, this one never disappoints.

⭐Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Simple Ingredients: I don't use tahini in this recipe. So sure, you already have all these ingredients in your pantry.
  • Simplicity: This is a simple hummus no tahini recipe, that skips the tahini, so it's easier and quicker to make!
  • Versatility: This delicious homemade hummus recipe without tahini is so versatile! You can use it for dipping vegetables, pita bread, seed crackers, or spreading on sandwiches and wraps.

🧾Ingredients

You'll find the exact measurements in the recipe card, but here's a closer look at a few of the ingredients and why I use them.

  • Chickpeas & Water: I use tender chickpeas as the creamy base and add water little by little until the hummus reaches that smooth, spreadable texture I love.
  • Garlic & Lemon Juice: Fresh garlic and freshly squeezed lemon juice give the dip its bright, vibrant flavor. I find this combination really lifts the whole bowl.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil: A good extra virgin olive oil adds richness and that velvety finish that makes homemade hummus taste special.
  • Cumin & Salt: I add cumin for gentle warmth and use salt to pull all the flavors together, balancing the garlic, lemon, and chickpeas beautifully.

process 1-4

1. Blend: In a food processor, blend the cooked chickpeas, garlic, salt, cumin powder, lemon juice, and extra virgin olive oil until smooth and creamy, adjusting consistency with water as needed. Taste and adjust salt if necessary.

2. Plate: Transfer the hummus to a serving platter and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil.

3. Garnish: Sprinkle with paprika and chopped chives for decoration.

4. Serve: I like to serve hummus without tahini with pita bread, vegetables, or crackers. Bon appétit!

📖Variations

  • Roasted Red Pepper Hummus: For a delicious twist, add some roasted red peppers (whether from a jar or homemade) and a sprinkle of smoked paprika into the hummus mixture before blending.
  • Avocado Hummus: For an extra creamy and nutritious touch, blend in some ripe avocado into the hummus mixture. Just make sure to adjust the lemon juice to balance out the flavors!
  • Beet Hummus: Add some roasted beetroots into the hummus mix, they bring a lovely earthy sweetness and vibrant color to the blend.

🍽 How to Serve Hummus

Here's how I enjoy hummus without tahini: I love dipping Seed Crackers into my hummus. It's the perfect crunchy combo! I also like to serve hummus with fresh veggies like carrots, cucumber, and bell peppers. It's a colorful and healthy snack.

💭My Tips for Recipe Success

Adjust Consistency: I always add the liquid slowly, whether it's water, lemon juice, or a bit more extra virgin olive oil. It's much easier to thin the hummus than to fix it once it's gone too runny.

Blend Thoroughly: I give the blender enough time to really work the chickpeas down. Letting it run a little longer makes such a difference, and you end up with that velvety, creamy texture that feels so satisfying.

Storage: Once it's ready, I like to transfer the hummus into an airtight container and pop it in the fridge right away. It keeps well for about 4-7 days, and the flavor stays fresh and bright.

Instructions

  • Drain, rinse and put the chickpeas into a food processor.
  • In the food processor, add garlic cloves, salt, cumin powder, lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil.
  • Blend the mixture until smooth and creamy, adding little water if necessary to reach your desired consistency.
  • Taste the hummus and adjust the seasoning with salt, if needed. Transfer the hummus to a serving plate and make a wheel.
  • Pour extra virgin olive oil over the hummus. Sprinkle paprika and chopped chives on top for garnish.
  • Serve the hummus with pita bread, vegetables, or crackers.

Notes

Start with Good Ingredients: I always begin with quality canned chickpeas, a generous pour of extra virgin olive oil, and fresh garlic cloves. It makes all the difference; your hummus will taste richer and more vibrant from the very first bite.
Don’t Skip the Garlic: I always use fresh garlic cloves instead of garlic powder. That little punch of sharpness brings the whole dip to life.
Taste as You Go: I stop a couple of times to taste and adjust the seasoning. A splash more lemon juice or a pinch of salt can really brighten the flavor.
Blend Until Creamy: I like to run the food processor a little longer and scrape down the sides to get everything super smooth and well combined.
Let the Flavors Settle: I usually make hummus ahead and let it chill in the fridge for a few hours. The flavor always deepens after it rests.
Garnish with Care: Just before serving, I add a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, a sprinkle of paprika, or some chopped chives. It looks beautiful and gives each bite an extra pop.
