What are Tapas?
Tapas are like little bites of Spain, perfect for snacking or building into a full meal. These small dishes come in all varieties, from cold options like gazpacho or pintxos to warm, hearty ones like paella or spicy papas arrugadas. While traditionally simple, tapas have transformed over the years, with bars and restaurants in Spain, and around the world turning them into something much more refined and creative.
Even today in my home region of Andalucía, many bars still serve tapas for free when you order a drink. It’s such a perfect way to catch up with friends, sharing great conversation over some tasty finger food.
Origins of Tapas
The tradition of tapas has humble, practical beginnings. In Andalusia, sherry drinkers would place small slices of bread or meat over their glasses between sips to keep fruit flies from buzzing around their sweet drinks. It was a clever little trick, with ham or chorizo often being the go-to choices for this purpose.

Since these salty meats made people thirsty, bartenders saw an opportunity to offer more snacks alongside the sherry, which naturally led to more drinks being ordered. Over time, these simple bites became just as much a part of the experience as the sherry itself.
Types of Tapas
If you’re looking to enjoy a delightful experience with your beer or wine, you can’t go wrong with tapas! These little bites come in a fantastic variety and can be grouped into three main categories: cosas de picar, pintxos, and cazuelas. Let me take you through each type.
- Cosas para Picar: These are finger foods, think of them as “nibbles” perfect for sharing. You’ll often find marinated olives, crunchy marcona almonds, and delicious slices of Manchego cheese among the favorites.
- Pintxos: If you ever visit any bars of the Spanish Basque country, you’ll definitely want to try pintxos. They typically consist of slices of bread topped with all sorts of delectable ingredients, all held together with a toothpick, easy to grab and even easier to enjoy!
- Cazuelas: Finally, we have cazuelas, which are small, saucy dishes served in charming terra cotta bowls. These shallow pots, made from earthenware, are perfect for serving. You can savor everything from rich stews to flavorful sauces, all presented beautifully.
So, whether you’re nibbly or craving something hearty, tapas offers something special!
Pintxos
I absolutely love pintxos! These tasty little bites are incredibly popular in northern Spain, especially around the Basque Country. They're like small works of art, usually a mix of cured meats, seafood, cheeses, and veggies, all piled on a slice of bread and held together by a toothpick.
Whenever I’m in Spain catching up with friends, indulging in pintxos is a must. It’s one of my favorite tapas, and I can't resist trying a variety whenever I get the chance.

A savory, slightly salty flavor that pairs perfectly with the tender, fluffy interior.
