This Easy Applesauce Cobbler is one of my favorite treats! The topping bakes up soft and sweet, and the applesauce is perfectly spiced. It's such a cozy dessert, especially as the weather cools down. Plus, it's super quick to put together!

Applesauce Cobbler Recipe

The moment the weather cools and the leaves begin to fall, I always reach for this easy apple cobbler recipe. It's soft, lightly spiced with cinnamon, and fills the kitchen with that warm, familiar smell that just feels like home. I've made this applesauce cobbler so many times that I no longer need to check the recipe. The magic begins with a cozy, cinnamon-spiced applesauce made from fresh apples, giving the cobbler its rich flavor and beautiful aroma.

The applesauce is what truly makes this cobbler stand out. I pour the thick, cinnamon-spiced applesauce over a quick, simple batter, and the transformation happens in the oven. As it bakes, the applesauce sinks in, the top turns golden and crisp, and the whole dessert becomes the softest, most delicious cake-like cobbler. Every time I pull it from the oven, it feels like the essence of fall captured in one comforting dish.

Why You'll Love My Recipe

  • Simple Ingredients: This recipe uses everyday pantry staples, so it's super easy to make. No special items are needed, making it perfect for any home cook.
  • Quick and Easy: You can whip this dessert up in no time! It's perfect for when friends drop by or when you're craving something sweet without the hassle.
  • Make-Ahead Friendly: You can prepare this cobbler in advance, making it ideal for potlucks or family gatherings. Just bake it fresh when you're ready to enjoy!

Applesauce Cobbler Ingredients

You'll find the exact measurements in the recipe card, but here's a closer look at a few of the ingredients and why I use them.

Applesauce Cobbler ingredients arranged on a dark surface, bowl of applesauce, glass of milk, sugar, flour, butter slices, and ground cinnamon in small bowls.
  • Unsalted Butter: I love using room-temperature unsalted butter. It adds a rich, creamy taste that really enhances the sweetness of the cobbler. It makes the crumb tender and moist.
  • Self-Rising Flour: I prefer self-rising flour because it has both flour and leavening agents, which help the cobbler rise and give it a soft, cake-like texture.
  • Sugar: I use granulated sugar to sweeten the applesauce cobbler, balancing the tartness of the applesauce while enhancing the cinnamon flavor.
  • Milk: Room-temperature milk is a must for me. It adds moisture and creates a smooth batter, ensuring a tender crumb in the finished cobbler.
  • Applesauce: I love using homemade applesauce in this recipe. It brings a sweet and slightly tart flavor that pairs perfectly with the cinnamon and batter.
  • Cinnamon: I always add cinnamon for that extra warmth and spice. It enhances the apple flavor and fills the kitchen with a cozy aroma that makes the cobbler even more comforting.

How to Make Applesauce Cobbler

You can find the complete printable recipe with measurements below, but for now, here's a quick overview of how it goes:

How to Make Applesauce Cobbler

1. Mix the Batter: Use a hand mixer to blend the self-rising flour, sugar, milk, and ½ teaspoon cinnamon until smooth.

2. Melt the Butter: In a preheated oven at 347°F (175°C), melt unsalted butter in a 7.5x10 inch (19x26 cm) pan.

3. Layer the Batter and Applesauce: Pour the batter over the melted butter without mixing. Spoon some applesauce over the batter without mixing.

4. Add Cinnamon and Bake: Sprinkle ½ teaspoon of cinnamon on the applesauce and bake at 347°F (175°C), for 40-45 minutes.

My Tips for Recipe Success

Room Temperature Ingredients: I like to let the butter and milk sit out until they're at room temperature; it makes a big difference. The batter comes together so much smoother, and the texture turns out soft and perfectly even.

Adjust Sweetness: Depending on how sweet your applesauce is, you might want to tweak the sugar a little. I usually start with the suggested amount, then taste the batter before baking to get it just right.

Cool Before Serving: Once it's out of the oven, I always let the cobbler cool for about 10-15 minutes. It helps it set nicely and makes serving so much easier.

Serve Warm: This cobbler is best warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a little whipped cream. It's simple but such a comforting combination.

Storage Tip: If there's any left, I keep it in an airtight container in the fridge. When I reheat a piece, I pop it in the microwave or oven for a few minutes, it tastes freshly baked all over again.

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the self-rising flour, sugar, milk, and ½ teaspoon cinnamon with a hand mixer until smooth and well combined.
  • Add the unsalted butter to a 19x26 cm (7.5x10 inch) pan and melt it in a preheated oven at 347°F(175°C) or 311°F(155°C) for fan-assisted.
  • Pour the batter over the melted butter and do not mix. Pour a few spoons of applesauce all over the batter and do not mix. Sprinkle ½ teaspoon cinnamon over the applesauce.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 347°F(175°C) or 311°F(155°C) for fan-assisted, for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the cobbler is cooked through.
  • Let it cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm, optionally with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream!

Notes

Avoid Overmixing: I mix the batter just until it's smooth; going too far can make it dense instead of light and tender.
Batter Consistency: I like the batter to be pourable but not too thin. If it feels a bit heavy, I add a splash more milk to get that smooth consistency; it helps the cobbler bake up evenly.
Do Not Stir After Pouring: Once the batter is poured, I leave it alone. Mixing it with the butter or applesauce stops it from forming that soft, cakey top that soaks in all the apple flavor.
Check for Doneness: I start checking around the 40-minute mark. The top should be golden, and a toothpick should come out clean. If it needs more time, I will give it another 5–10 minutes.
Allow Cooling Time: I always let the cobbler cool for a bit before serving. It helps it set and makes scooping much easier.
