Mango Habanero Sauce

Published: Oct 13, 2024 by Estefania · This post may contain affiliate links · 1 Comment

The first time I tasted mango habanero sauce, I was hooked. It had that perfect kick, just the right balance between sweet and spicy, leaving me craving more. I couldn’t stop talking about it, how the sweetness of the mango blended so seamlessly with the fiery heat of the habanero peppers. But what really blew me away was how incredible it tasted on chicken wings. It turned a simple plate of wings into a flavor explosion that was impossible to resist.

Mango Habanero Sauce

Mango and Habanero Sauce

I’ve always loved sauces with a bit of tang, but this one took things to a whole new level. This sauce balances the heat with a sweet punch of mango, it is pure magic. Anyone who loves a sauce that’s bold yet balanced, I thought, would fall in love with this one, just like I had.

This sauce is amazing not just as a dip but also as a marinade for wings, ribs, salmon, and so many other dishes. It starts off sweet, but don’t be fooled, it sneaks up with a fiery finish, so it’s definitely for those who enjoy a bit of a challenge!

I have to admit, I've always been pretty sensitive to spicy food. But lately, I've been trying to handle it better, and I've found some hot sauces that are just too good to ignore. That’s what made me want to try this mango habanero sauce!

The sweetness from the mango really balances out the heat from the habanero peppers, but you can also add a little sugar, and to keep it mild, I recommend to also remove the seeds from the peppers if you want to make mild sauce. But if you’re into extra heat, feel free to leave some seeds. It’ll definitely spice things up!

  • Quick and Simple: This recipe is super easy and takes just about 15 minutes. You'll have a delicious homemade sauce in no time!
  • Healthy Ingredients: Made with fresh mangoes and ginger, and no preservatives, it's a healthier choice than store-bought sauces, packed with natural flavors.
  • Adjustable Spice: You can control the heat by using more or fewer habanero peppers or removing the seeds to match your spice preference.
  • So Versatile: This sauce works great as a glaze for grilled meats, a dip for fried foods, or even as a spicy topping for tacos, sandwiches, and burgers!

🧾Mango Habanero Sauce Ingredients

Here’s the breakdown of what’s in this Mango Habanero Sauce recipe:

Mango Habanero Sauce
  • Mangoes: I love using fresh, ripe mangoes for their natural sweetness, which balances the heat from the habaneros. If you don't have fresh mangoes, mango puree works too.
  • Habanero Peppers: I use raw habaneros for their bold spiciness. You can adjust the spice level by using more or less, or removing the seeds to control the heat.
  • Lime Juice: Fresh lime juice adds a zesty tang that balances the sweetness of the mangoes and boosts the overall flavor. It also helps preserve the sauce.
  • Ginger: Fresh ginger adds a gentle heat and a warm, peppery bite that goes perfectly with the habanero spice, making the sauce even more flavorful.
  • Vegetable Oil: A little vegetable oil helps everything come together smoothly and cook evenly without sticking, giving the sauce a richer texture.
  • Seasoning: I season the sauce with salt, paprika, and turmeric. Salt balances the flavors, paprika adds a mild sweetness and color, while turmeric gives an earthy warmth and boosts the golden color.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar gives a nice tangy kick and helps preserve the sauce. You can also use white or rice vinegar if that's what you have.

💭Tips for Recipe Success

Blend Smooth: Make sure to blend the mangoes, habaneros, ginger, and lime juice until it's completely smooth. This gives your sauce a nice, consistent texture and mixed flavors.

Simmer Gently: Cook the sauce on medium heat. Stir it often to avoid burning and sticking to the pan.

Adjust Spice: Taste the sauce before finishing. If it’s too spicy, you can add more mango or a bit of honey to sweeten it up.

Watch Thickness: The sauce will thicken as it cooks. Keep stirring to prevent it from sticking or burning. If it gets too thick, just add a splash of water or vinegar.

Taste and Adjust: Keep tasting and tweak the seasoning as needed. You might want to add more salt, vinegar, or lime juice to get the flavor just right.

Store Properly: Refrigerate the sauce and it should stay good for a few weeks. For longer storage, you can freeze it in portions.

Instructions

  • Peel, and cut the mangoes, placing them in a hand blender.
  • Add the Habanero peppers in a blender (depending on how spicy you want it, you can remove the seeds from the Habanero chilies).
  • Add the ginger and lime juice to the blender, then blend until smooth.
  • In a saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
  • Add the mango mixture, salt, paprika powder, turmeric powder, and apple cider vinegar to the saucepan. Stir well to combine, let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes or until thickened, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove the saucepan from heat, place the mango habanero sauce in a bowl, and let the sauce cool completely before transferring it to a sterilized jar or container.

Notes

Picking Mangoes: Choose ripe mangoes for the best flavor. They should smell sweet and feel a little soft when you press them.
Handling Habanero Peppers: It's a good idea to wear gloves when handling habaneros, especially if you're sensitive to spice. Be extra careful with the seeds, they're the spiciest part!
Balancing Spice: Adjust the number of habaneros and decide if you want to keep the seeds depending on how spicy you like it. The heat will reduce a bit when cooked, but it’ll still pack a punch.
Blending Ingredients: Blend the mangoes, peppers, ginger, and lime juice until smooth for an even texture in your sauce.
Thickening the Sauce: Simmer the sauce for about 10 minutes or until it thickens to your liking. It might take a little more or less time depending on how juicy your mangoes are.
Cooling and Storing: Let the sauce cool before pouring it into a clean jar or container. This keeps it fresh longer.
Taste Test: Before you finish cooking, taste the sauce. You can tweak it with more salt, lime juice, or even a bit of honey to balance the flavors.
Sterilizing Jars: Make sure your jar or container is properly sterilized to keep the sauce fresh. You can boil the jar for 10 minutes or use a dishwasher with a sterilization cycle.
Flavor Gets Better: Let the sauce sit in the fridge for a day or two before using it, this will help the flavors develop even more!
