Garlic Butter Sauce

Why You'll Love My Garlic Butter Sauce

  • Ready in 10 Minutes: This is one of the quickest sauces I make when a meal needs a little more flavor.
  • Made with Simple Ingredients: You only need butter, garlic, lemon, parsley, and a few basic seasonings.
  • Useful with Many Dishes: Serve it with seafood, chicken, pasta, potatoes, vegetables, or bread.
  • Easy to Adjust: You can make it brighter with more lemon, add herbs, or give it gentle heat with chili flakes.

Garlic butter sauce is one of those simple recipes I turn to whenever the main dish tastes as though it needs something extra. A spoonful can completely change grilled seafood, roasted vegetables, or a plain piece of chicken without adding much work to the meal. I especially like serving it with Grilled Shrimp Skewers, spooning it over Chicken Spiedini, or keeping a small bowl on the table for dipping warm bread.

The flavor is rich and buttery, but the lemon keeps it from feeling too heavy. Fresh garlic softens as it cooks gently in the butter, while parsley adds a clean, herby finish. The technique is simple, but low heat matters because it allows the garlic to release its flavor without browning or becoming bitter. That balance is what makes the sauce work so well with dishes such as Shrimp Scampi Pasta, Crispy Smashed Potatoes, and grilled vegetables.

Garlic Butter Sauce

Key Ingredients in Garlic Butter Sauce

These simple ingredients work together to create a sauce that tastes rich, fresh, and balanced.

  • Unsalted Butter: I prefer unsalted butter because it gives me better control over the seasoning. It also creates the smooth, rich base that makes this sauce so versatile.
  • Fresh Garlic: Freshly minced garlic gives the sauce a deeper flavor than garlic powder. I mince it finely so it softens quickly and spreads evenly through the butter.
  • Fresh Lemon Juice: Lemon cuts through the richness of the butter and gives the sauce a brighter finish. I usually add a little more when serving it with fish or shrimp.
  • Fresh Parsley: Parsley adds color and a fresh herbal flavor. I stir it in after removing the saucepan from the heat so it keeps its clean taste.

How to Make Garlic Butter Sauce

Follow these simple steps to prepare the sauce in about 10 minutes. You can find the complete printable recipe with measurements below.

process 1-4

1. Melt the Butter: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter slowly so it doesn't brown.
2. Cook the Garlic: Add the chopped garlic and let it gently cook for 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
3. Season the Sauce: Stir in the lemon juice, salt, and black pepper while the sauce is still hot.
4. Add the Parsley: Remove from heat and mix in the parsley so it stays fresh and vibrant.

Helpful Swaps

  • Use salted butter and reduce the added salt to taste.
  • Replace parsley with finely chopped chives for a mild onion flavor.
  • Add a small pinch of red pepper flakes for gentle heat.
  • Add a little lemon zest for more citrus flavor without making the sauce thinner.
  • Use a mix of parsley and oregano when serving the sauce with chicken or roasted vegetables.

Tips for Garlic Butter Sauce

Use a Small Saucepan: A small saucepan keeps the butter and garlic together, making it easier to control the heat. In a large pan, the butter spreads too thinly, and the garlic can cook unevenly.

Mince the Garlic Finely: Finely minced garlic distributes more evenly throughout the sauce. Large pieces can remain sharp in the middle or brown around the edges before they soften.

Add the Lemon Gradually: Start with the amount listed, then taste the sauce before adding more. I like a stronger lemon flavor with seafood, but a milder finish usually works better with chicken or pasta.

Adjust the Consistency for Pasta: When using the sauce with pasta, add a spoonful or two of warm pasta water. This helps the sauce coat the pasta instead of settling at the bottom of the bowl.

Storage

I store leftover garlic butter sauce in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to four days. The butter will firm up as it chills, so reheat it gently in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring until it becomes smooth and pourable again.

What to Serve with Garlic Butter Sauce

I like spooning this sauce over Grilled Italian Chicken Thighs, drizzling it onto Greek Lemon Potatoes, or serving it alongside Sautéed Zucchini. It also works well with baked fish, steak, rice, mushrooms, and crusty bread when you want something simple to soak up every bit of the buttery garlic flavor.

Instructions

  • Add 120 g unsalted butter to a small saucepan. Melt it slowly over low to medium-low heat, stirring occasionally so it does not brown.
  • Add 3 cloves garlic , finely minced, and cook for 30-45 seconds, stirring continuously, until the garlic smells fragrant but has not started to brown.
  • Stir in 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice, ½ tsp salt, and ¼ tsp black pepper. Cook for another 15-20 seconds over low heat.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh parsley.
  • Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Serve the garlic butter sauce immediately while it is warm and pourable.

Notes

Keep the Heat Gentle: I melt the butter slowly because high heat can brown the butter and burn the garlic before it has time to flavor the sauce.
Watch the Garlic Closely: Garlic cooks quickly once it reaches the warm butter. I remove the pan from the heat as soon as it smells fragrant and looks lightly softened.
Adjust the Lemon: One tablespoon gives the sauce a fresh finish without making it too sharp. Add a small extra squeeze when serving it with seafood or vegetables.
Serve It Warm: The sauce naturally thickens as the butter cools. I warm it gently over low heat for a few seconds if it needs to become pourable again.

Tried this tonight and it was amazing! So simple, but the flavor was rich and comforting. I used it over grilled chicken skewers.
