⭐Why You'll Love This Air Fryer Kale Chips

Quick and Easy: Air fryer kale chips are super simple to make. With just a few ingredients and minimal prep, you can have a crispy, tasty snack in under 10 minutes.

Kid-Friendly: Kale chips are a fun, healthy alternative to regular snacks, and kids usually love them. They're a great way to sneak more greens into your family's diet.

Customizable Flavor: This basic recipe is perfect for experimenting with your favorite seasonings. Whether you like classic salt and pepper, mild spices, or a sprinkle of nutritional yeast, you can make them just the way you like.

Versatile: Kale chips are so versatile. Enjoy them alone, toss them in salads, or use them as a crunchy topping for soups and grain bowls. They’re also fantastic in lunch boxes or as a party snack.

🧾Kale Chips Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make this Kale Chips:

Kale: I use curly kale for these chips, but any kind will work. Lacinato kale is great too. The natural texture of kale makes it crisp up perfectly in the air fryer, giving you that satisfying crunch.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil: I love using extra virgin olive oil because it makes the kale chips super crispy. You can also use a spray of oil or avocado oil—just make sure the leaves are well-coated.

Salt: A pinch of salt is key for balancing the flavors and making these chips taste just right.

White Pepper Powder: Adds a little extra flavor and seasoning to make the chips even better.

👩🏻‍🍳How to Make Kale Chips

These step-by-step instructions and photos will help you to visualize how to make this recipe. See the recipe card for a printable version of this recipe.

process 1

1. Trim the thick stems from the kale leaves and chop the leaves into bite-sized pieces. In a large bowl, toss the kale with extra virgin olive oil until evenly coated. Sprinkle salt and white pepper on the kale, then toss to mix evenly.

process 2

2. Arrange the seasoned kale in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Air fry the kale at 190°C (375°F) for 3-5 minutes. Watch closely to avoid burning.

process 3

3. Once the kale chips are crispy, take them out of the air fryer and let them cool a bit. They'll get even crispier as they cool.

process 4

4. Serve right away or keep in an airtight container for up to 2 days to stay crispy.

🍽 What to Serve with Kale Chips

Kale chips are such a versatile snack and can go with lots of different dishes!

I love serving them with dips like hummus, guacamole, or muhammara. They’re also great as a crunchy topping for salads, like stuffed tomato or potato salad, and soups, like butternut squash or broccoli cheddar.

They make a fantastic side with a chicken sandwich, bruschetta, or pinchos. I even enjoy them alongside strawberry mango smoothie, green juice, or lemonade.

💭Tips for Recipe Success

Choose Tender Leaves: Go for fresh, vibrant kale without yellow spots or wilting. Fresher kale crisps up better and has a nicer texture.

Remove Moisture: Wash the kale well to get rid of any dirt, and make sure it’s completely dry. Use a salad spinner or pat it with paper towels to prevent steaming instead of crisping.

Cut Even Pieces: Tear or cut the kale into uniform, bite-sized pieces so they cook evenly. Uneven sizes can lead to some chips being undercooked or burnt.

Cook in Batches: Lay the kale in a single layer in the air fryer basket. If you overcrowd it, the chips won’t cook evenly. Cook in batches if needed to give each piece enough air.

Keep an Eye on Them: Kale chips can burn quickly. Start checking them after 3 minutes, and shake the basket halfway through. Adjust the cooking time if needed based on your air fryer.

Preserve Crispiness: Let the chips cool completely before storing. This keeps them crispy. Keep them in an airtight container to stay fresh for up to 2 days.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Start by washing the kale thoroughly under cold water and dry it completely using a salad spinner or by patting it dry with paper towels.
  • Trim the kale leaves from the thick stems and chop them into bite-sized pieces.
  • In a large bowl, toss the kale pieces with extra virgin olive oil, ensuring each piece is evenly coated.
  • Sprinkle the salt and white pepper powder over the kale and toss again to distribute the seasoning evenly.
  • Place the seasoned kale in the air fryer basket in a single layer.
  • Air fry the kale in a preheated air fryer at 190°C (375°F) for 3-5 minutes. Keep an eye on the kale as it can go from perfectly crispy to burnt very quickly.
  • Once the kale chips are crispy, remove them from the air fryer and let them cool slightly. The chips will continue to crisp up as they cool.
  • Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for up to 2 days to retain crispiness.

Notes

Use Fresh Kale: Fresh kale makes the best chips. If it’s wilted or old, it won’t crisp up well.
Dry the Kale Well: Make sure the kale is completely dry before you season it. Any moisture can make it steam instead of getting crispy. A salad spinner or paper towels work great for this.
Lightly Coat with Oil: Toss the kale with just enough olive oil to coat it lightly. Too much oil makes them greasy, while too little can leave some pieces uncooked.
Don’t Overcrowd the Air Fryer: Lay the kale out in a single layer in the air fryer basket. If you pack it too tightly, some chips will cook unevenly. It’s better to cook in batches if needed.
Keep an Eye on Cooking Time: Kale chips can burn quickly, so start checking them around the 3-minute mark. Shake the basket halfway through to ensure even cooking.
Adjust the Temperature: If your air fryer cooks too fast or slow, adjust the temperature. Lower it if the chips are browning too quickly, or raise it if they’re not crisping up.
Cool Before Storing: Let the chips cool completely before storing them in an airtight container to keep them crisp for up to two days.
Try Different Flavors: Once you’ve got the basic recipe down, experiment with different seasonings like nutritional yeast for a cheesy taste, paprika for smokiness, or garlic powder for a little kick.
Serving Ideas: Kale chips are great on their own, but they’re also a tasty, crunchy topping for salads, soups, or grain bowls.
